After twenty years as a business executive, Harvey graduated in law, studied conflict resolution at Harvard Law School, and then became a Visiting Researcher with the Program on Negotiation, where he assisted in teaching courses and workshops in negotiation and mediation. As of July 1, 1999, Harvey became Dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of Manitoba and continues as Professor of Alternative Methods of Dispute Resolution. Through Resolution Processes Inc., he provides advice and training in negotiation and conflict resolution , and serves as a mediator, arbitrator and facilitator.
