WHO ARE WE?

The Arbitration and Mediation and Institute of Ontario Inc. is the largest affiliate of The Arbitration and Mediation Institute of Canada Inc. (AMIC). AMIC is a non profit organization established to provide national leadership in the promotion of ADR in Canada.

WHAT DO WE DO?

AMIO/AMIC develops standards for mediation and arbitration including:

A Code of Ethics

Rules of Procedure for the Conduct of Arbitrations and Mediations

Standards for Approving Arbitration and Mediation Training Courses

A procedure for the national accreditation of Chartered Mediators (C.Med.) and Chartered Arbitrators (C.Arb.)

AMIO/AMIC educates mediators and arbitrators by:

conducting live and distance education courses, seminars and conferences on various skills and issues in arbitration and mediation

creating sections based on mediation and arbitration specialties which conduct meetings on areas of interest to members of the section

publishing a provincial and National newsletter which includes

~ information on what's happening in AMIC/AMIO

~ current events that effect the practice of arbitration and mediation

~ articles on improving skills in arbitration and mediation

AMIO/AMIC provides a method for the public to find qualified mediators and arbitrators by:

the creation of the C.Med. and the C.Arb. designation

the creation of panels of arbitrators and mediators from which the public can select arbitrators and mediators who meet their needs

~ arbitrators and mediators who must meet certain criteria to get on the panel and remain on the panel

~ arbitrators and mediators who list areas of expertise in AMIO's central databank

~ arbitrators and mediators who list professional qualifications in AMIO's central databank

AMIO/AMIC assists arbitrators and mediators in being heard by:

contacting government departments and corporations concerning issues involving arbitrators and mediators

cooperating with other alternative dispute organizations in order to ensure the government is educated as to issues of concern involving arbitrators and mediators

HOW CAN YOU JOIN AMIO?

You can join AMIO by filling in a form obtained by writing or phoning our office or from our website. There are three forms of affiliation: Associate (open to all persons of good character and reputation interested in arbitration or mediation but not active in the field); Student Member (open to all persons of good character and reputation enrolled in arbitration and mediation courses approved by AMIO) and Member (open to all persons of good character and reputation who have successfully completed an AMIO approved course in arbitration or mediation).
