Alberta Arbitration and Mediation Society
Who we are?
A not-for-profit society established in 1982, currently a large and vigorous regional affiliate of the Arbitration and Mediation Institute of Canada, Inc. Membership-based: we have grown to over 600 members, more that tripled in the last two years. Our members are dispute resolution practitioners and students -- arbitrators, negotiators and mediators -- and anyone who simply has an interest in alternatives (to litigation) in dispute resolution. There are no membership prerequisites.
What do we do as a Society:
!
Provide training in conflict resolution province-wide (our "Certificate Program in Conflict Management" is the only one of its kind in North America, and is currently offered in seven Alberta cities through various post-secondary institutions)!
Provide custom-designed conflict resolution training for public and private corporate clients!
Provide an arbitrator/mediator referral service for the general public!
Promote the wider use of arbitration and mediation as alternatives to litigation!
Produce an annual "Directory of Mediators and Arbitrators"!
Offer access to an absolutely first-class library of dispute resolution material (print and audio-visual)!
Provide a consultative service in dispute resolution systems design!
Provide limited "pro-bono" arbitrator and mediator services to not-for-profit organizations throughout the province!
Screen and recommend Alberta-based practitioners for the national designations, "Chartered Arbitrator" and Chartered Mediator"How we are funded: Membership fees and course tuition fees
What we are not: A government agency
Points to note:
Our members are experts in dispute resolution and are known for their ability to work as neutrals in assisting two or more parties to resolve their disputes --
-- through mediation, where the mediator assists the parties in arriving at their own solution (ie, solution not imposed by the mediator)
-- through arbitration, where the arbitrator hears the evidence and makes a ruling
We also provide facilitators, referees, and moderators for public "round table" sessions.
Our members must adhere to the Society's Code of Professional Conduct for mediators and arbitrators. Arbitrators are subject to the Society's "Arbitration Rules".
The Society, through its wholly-owned subsidiary organization, Alberta Arbitration and Mediation Services Inc., functions as the Provincial Administrator for the Canadian Motor Vehicle Arbitration Plan (CAMVAP), as well as the Jurisdictional Assignment Plan for the Alberta Construction Industry.
